SkinPen is the first microneedling device to be FDA approved and is clinically proven to treat facial acne scarring and boost collagen production safely and effectively. The technology uses patented single use sterile needle cartridges which makes the treatment extremely safe and hygienic. Only SkinPen offers patients this level of safety.
Patients love the improved skin texture, elasticity, complexion and reduced scarring. SkinPen produces natural results by relying on the skin’s ability to heal and repair itself.
SkinPen is appropriate for the majority of patients with a relatively short post-treatment downtime and easily managed aftercare.
Microneedling is designed to improve texture, elasticity, complexion and scarring. This is achieved by using the body’s natural healing ability. SkinPen has adjustable depth setting which allows us to treat on all areas of the face and body.
SkinPen can treat a variety of skincare needs including:
Microneedling works by using controlled micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process while minimising cellular damage. These micro-injuries stimulate the fibroblasts which are found in cells and are responsible for producing collagen.
There are three phases to the wound-repair process:
Phase 1: Inflammation – By piercing the skin, the body’s immune system is triggered to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.
Phase 2: Proliferation – The new granulation cells which are part of the extracellular matrix rebuild the wound.
Phase 3: Remodelling – The new wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels.
Microneedling is suitable and safe to treat on all skin types. This is because it doesn’t use heat and is totally mechanical. The treatment is great for anyone looking to treat acne scarring as well as improving the texture and complexion of their skin. It is important to make sure that prior to SkinPen treatments that patients do not have any inflammation or infected areas on their skin. Any wounds and inflammation (including cystic acne) will have to clear before commencing with treatment
30 minutes prior to the treatment a topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the treated area. The treatment time varies depending on the size of the area treated and can vary between 30 minutes and 1 hour.
Prior to the treatment a topical anaesthetic cream will be applied to the treated area to improve the patients comfort. Patients typically experience a mild ‘pin prick’ sensation and gentle vibrations from the pen.
The amount of treatments needed is dependent on the individual and their skin condition. Usually a course of 3 treatments will be recommended at 4 to 6 week intervals for optimal results.
Prior to treatment, patients are advised to avoid excessive sun exposure at least 2 weeks prior to course of treatment.
Patients are advised to avoid deep depth chemical peels and laser resurfacing 4-6 weeks prior to treatment. Superficial/medium depth peels should be completed 2 weeks prior to SkinPen.
Patients are advised to follow a skincare routine recommended by their practitioner to achieve best treatment results.
Patients should avoid the use of Retinols, AHA’s and BHA’s at least 48hrs prior to treatment.
Yes SkinPen is a safe device, it has received a CE mark medical grade registration in Europe as well as FDA clearance in the USA which provides practices with a safe and effective device compliant and certified to ISO and BSI standards. It has also been clinically tested and validated to prevent the risk of cross contamination during treatment
Minimal downtime is present after the treatment. You will experience a sunburn type redness and mild swelling for up to 48hrs after the treatment. Dry skin and flaking may be noticed which may also be followed by tiny scabs in the areas treated, but this will subside within a few days. Your practitioner will recommend an after-care skin routine to help with any downtime.
Immediately after treatment, most patients will experience severe redness and mild swelling; this is completely normal and will subside within 48hours after the treatment.
There is a very low risk of scarring and hyperpigmentation post treatment. All of these risks will be addressed during consultation and your therapist will advise you how to minimise these risks by providing you with essential aftercare, this includes: how to cleanse the skin, which skincare to use, limiting sun exposure and avoiding touching the skin to avoid bacteria entering the skin.
Best visible results are seen when a course of 3 to 6 treatments has been completed, spaced out 4-6 weeks apart. However, some patients see a significant improvement even after the first session. Micro- needling is a continuous and progressive treatment which requires maintenance treatment to boost the skin every 3-6 months.
Patients are advised to avoid application of make-up for at least 24hours after the treatment. It is also not advisable to use retinol or any creams which are too active for a week. Patient will be given a growth factor serum to use before bed and the next morning to hydrate and soothe the skin.
