Embrace the beauty of ageing gracefully with Berkshire Aesthetics! We understand that while growing older is a natural part of life, some changes can make you feel older than you are. Our mission is to help you feel confident and youthful by addressing these signs so you look as vibrant as you feel inside. You’re not alone in this journey, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Ageing is a complex process that affects every layer of the skin. As we age, our skin produces less collagen and elastin, proteins that provide structure and elasticity. This decrease leads to fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Fat pads under the skin also shift and diminish, causing volume loss and a hollow appearance. Environmental factors like sun exposure, pollution, and lifestyle choices such as smoking and diet also contribute to the ageing process, accelerating these changes.

In today’s world, fifty is the new thirty, and sixty is the new forty. Our active, social, and varied lifestyles surpass those of previous generations. However, the disconnect between how we feel and look can be challenging.

At Berkshire Aesthetics, we’re here to bridge that gap. Under the expert direction of Dr. Selena Langdon, one of the UK’s leading aesthetic doctors, all our facial treatments are designed to rejuvenate and refresh your appearance. Dr. Langdon is a Country Expert for the prestigious Swiss filler brand Teoxane and an Ambassador for Obagi Medical, ensuring you receive the highest quality care and results.

fundamentals of the ageing face

Facial aging is a complex process with many structural changes occurring behind the scenes. When we are young, the fat in our faces is evenly distributed, which plumps up the forehead, temples, cheeks, and areas around the eyes and mouth, giving us a youthful and vibrant appearance.

As we age, several key changes take place. The face loses volume as fat decreases, clumps up, and shifts downward. This redistribution of fat causes formerly round and full facial features to sink, while skin that was once smooth and tight becomes loose and sags. Concurrently, other parts of the face, particularly the lower half, gain fat, leading to sagging around the chin and the appearance of jowls in the neck.

In addition to volume loss and fat redistribution, the development of wrinkles significantly contributes to the aging appearance. Deep wrinkles in the forehead and between the eyebrows, known as expression or animation lines, form due to the continuous movement of facial muscles that tug on and eventually crease the skin. Other folds, such as nasolabial folds, may deepen as fat decreases and shifts around the face.

Fine wrinkles, often the result of sun damage, smoking, and the natural degeneration of skin elements, also contribute to an aged look. These fine lines are caused by the breakdown of collagen and elastin, proteins that keep the skin thick and supple. Environmental factors like UV exposure accelerate this breakdown, leading to premature aging and more pronounced wrinkles.

Understanding these intricate processes highlights the importance of targeted treatments that address multiple aspects of aging. At Berkshire Aesthetics, we offer advanced facial treatments designed to combat these changes, restoring volume, smoothing wrinkles, and rejuvenating the skin for a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Our expert team, led by Dr. Selena Langdon, utilizes the latest techniques and products to ensure natural-looking results that enhance your unique beauty.

Why do we look older as we age?

The ageing of the face is a multifaceted process influenced by a combination of biological and environmental factors. These elements work synergistically to alter the skin’s structural integrity and aesthetic appearance over time. Here are some of the primary reasons why the face ages:

Loss of Collagen and Elastin

As we age, our bodies produce less collagen and elastin, the essential proteins responsible for maintaining skin firmness and elasticity. Collagen provides structural support, while elastin allows the skin to return to its original shape after stretching or contracting. The decline in these proteins leads to diminished skin resilience, resulting in the formation of wrinkles, sagging skin, and a noticeable reduction in facial volume. This process is exacerbated by intrinsic ageing, a natural cellular function and regeneration decline.

Reduction in Fat and Bone Density

The face undergoes significant changes in fat distribution and bone density over time. Subcutaneous fat, which once provided youthful plumpness, gradually diminishes and redistributes. This loss contributes to a hollowed-out appearance, particularly around the cheeks, eyes, and temples. The underlying bone structure also loses density and recedes, further exacerbating facial folds and creases’ gaunt look and deepening. These changes are part of the normal ageing process but can be accelerated by genetic factors and lifestyle choices.

Exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation

Chronic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a leading cause of premature skin ageing, known as photoaging. UV rays penetrate the skin, damaging the DNA in skin cells and breaking down collagen and elastin fibres. This damage manifests as fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation (age spots), and a leathery skin texture. Photoaging is particularly insidious because it accumulates over years of sun exposure, often without immediate visible effects, leading to significant skin ageing later in life.

Repetitive Facial Movements

Facial expressions, such as squinting, frowning, and smiling, form dynamic wrinkles. Over time, these repetitive movements cause the skin to crease and form permanent lines, particularly around the eyes (crow’s feet), mouth (smile lines), and forehead (frown lines). The skin’s reduced ability to bounce back due to decreased elastin exacerbates these expression lines, making them more pronounced as we age.
Several lifestyle choices can accelerate the ageing process and affect facial appearance. Smoking, for example, constricts blood vessels and reduces blood flow to the skin, depriving it of oxygen and essential nutrients. This leads to a dull, sallow complexion and the formation of wrinkles. A poor diet lacking in essential vitamins and antioxidants can also impair skin health, while a lack of exercise reduces circulation and skin vitality. Additionally, chronic stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that breaks down collagen and contributes to skin thinning and wrinkling.

Lifestyle Factors

Understanding these complex mechanisms highlights the importance of adopting a comprehensive approach to skincare and lifestyle. At Berkshire Aesthetics, we are dedicated to addressing these ageing factors through advanced treatments and personalized care. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Selena Langdon, one of the UK’s leading aesthetic doctors, we offer solutions that restore youthful vitality and enhance natural beauty.
