Why we start with a consultation

Every treatment begins with a medical assessment. We need to understand your medical history, current health, skin condition and concerns before prescribing any procedure. This protects your safety and ensures the treatment is clinically appropriate for you.

During your consultation, your clinician will explain what the treatment can realistically achieve, any risks specific to you, and whether an alternative might be more appropriate. Consultations are carried out by our doctors or advanced aesthetic practitioners, depending on the treatment or concern being assessed.

Clinical overview

Julaine contains microparticles of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) that are injected in a grid-like pattern. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers that add immediate volume, PLLA acts as a controlled stimulus for neocollagenesis — your body gradually lays down new collagen around the particles over weeks to months. We use Julaine selectively for patients whose main concern is crepey texture, early to moderate laxity, or loss of firmness — and who understand that results are gradual rather than instant. If your primary concern is volume loss, immediate contouring, or a quick-result refresh, other options are usually more appropriate. Suitability is confirmed during consultation, where we assess your skin quality, anatomy, medical history, expectations, and whether Julaine (or an alternative such as Profhilo, SkinVive, or a combination plan) is the safest and most effective choice.

Technology & Science

Julaine is manufactured by Nordberg Medical of Sweden using their proprietary LaSynPro technology. This advanced manufacturing process produces highly purified, uniformly sized PLLA microspheres — significantly more consistent in particle size and shape than older PLLA biostimulators such as Sculptra.

This uniformity matters clinically. Evenly sized particles distribute more predictably within tissue and stimulate a more controlled collagen response. Julaine specifically promotes Type I collagen production — the most abundant and structurally important collagen in the skin — through direct fibroblast activation rather than relying on an inflammatory foreign-body response.

The PLLA microspheres are biocompatible and biodegradable. After injection, they gradually dissolve over 9–12 months while stimulating ongoing neocollagenesis. The result is new, healthy collagen that continues to improve skin firmness and quality long after the PLLA particles have been reabsorbed.

Julaine is CE-marked for use in Europe and MHRA-approved in the UK. Poly-L-lactic acid has been used safely in medicine for over 50 years in applications including absorbable sutures, bone fixation devices and soft-tissue implants.

How it compares to Sculptra

Julaine and Sculptra both contain poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), but they are not the same product. Key differences include:

Particle technology: Julaine uses LaSynPro manufacturing to produce smaller, more uniform microspheres. Sculptra's particles are less consistent in size, which can affect distribution and predictability.

Mechanism of action: Julaine activates fibroblasts directly to produce Type I collagen through a cellular repair pathway. Sculptra relies more heavily on an inflammatory foreign-body response to trigger collagen formation, which can sometimes produce less predictable results.

Aftercare: Julaine does not require post-treatment massage. Sculptra requires a strict '5-5-5' massage protocol — 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days — to reduce the risk of nodule formation.

Safety profile: Julaine has no reported cases of vascular occlusion to date. The smaller, more uniform particles also reduce the risk of palpable nodule formation compared to older PLLA formulations.

Both are effective biostimulators, but Julaine represents a next-generation approach with improved manufacturing precision and a simplified aftercare protocol.

Treatment Areas

Mid-face and cheeks

Julaine restores firmness and structural support to the mid-face, addressing the flattening and descent that occurs as collagen diminishes with age. Cheek treatment can improve the overall facial contour without the 'overfilled' appearance associated with volume-based fillers.

Jawline and lower face

Loss of definition along the jawline is one of the most common concerns in patients over 40. Julaine gradually rebuilds collagen support in this area, helping to restore a more defined jaw contour and reducing the appearance of jowling.

Neck

The neck is particularly prone to crepey texture and laxity because the skin is thinner and has fewer oil glands. Julaine can improve neck skin quality and firmness when administered by experienced practitioners who understand the specific anatomical considerations of this area.

Décolletage

Sun damage and ageing often show prominently on the décolletage. Julaine can improve skin texture and firmness in this area, reducing the crepey, lined appearance that many patients find difficult to treat with topical products alone.

Hands

In selected cases, Julaine can be used to improve the appearance of ageing hands where skin thinning and loss of volume make tendons and veins more prominent. Suitability for hand treatment is assessed on a case-by-case basis during consultation.

Benefits by Age

How this treatment may benefit patients at different life stages. Individual results depend on baseline skin quality, health and lifestyle factors.

30s — early prevention

Patients in their 30s may notice the earliest signs of collagen decline — subtle loss of skin bounce, fine texture changes, or early nasolabial softening. Julaine at this stage is a preventive investment, stimulating collagen before significant loss has occurred. Results can be particularly natural and long-lasting when started early.

40s — active restoration

This is when most patients notice visible changes: reduced firmness, more defined nasolabial folds, early jowling, and neck texture changes. Julaine is particularly effective in the 40s, when the skin still has good regenerative capacity but needs targeted stimulation to counteract accelerating collagen loss.

50s and beyond — structural support

In patients over 50, collagen loss is typically more advanced. Julaine can provide meaningful improvement in skin quality and firmness, though expectations should be calibrated — biostimulation works with your body's own processes, and regenerative capacity naturally decreases with age. Combination approaches with HA boosters or energy-based devices may be recommended.

GLP-1 Medication & Facial Changes

An increasing number of patients are presenting with facial changes related to GLP-1 receptor agonist medications (such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro). Rapid weight loss from these medications can cause facial fat pad depletion, leading to a gaunt, hollow or aged appearance — often described as 'Ozempic face'.

Julaine is particularly well-suited to addressing these changes because it stimulates your body's own collagen production rather than simply replacing lost volume with filler. The gradual, natural-looking improvement helps restore facial structure and skin quality without creating an overfilled appearance.

For patients experiencing GLP-1-related facial changes, we assess whether Julaine alone or a combination approach (potentially incorporating HA fillers for specific areas of volume loss) will produce the most natural and sustainable result. This is always discussed during your consultation with Dr Langdon.

Key Benefits

These are the main clinical and practical reasons patients choose Julaine (JULÄINE) collagen biostimulator in Maidenhead. Your treatment plan is tailored after consultation rather than selected from a fixed package.

  • Stimulates your body's own collagen production for natural, gradual improvement
  • Improves skin firmness, texture and overall quality over weeks to months
  • Not a gel filler — does not create an 'overfilled' appearance
  • Can treat face, neck, décolletage and hands (selected cases)
  • Results develop progressively and can last longer than some HA-based treatments

Suitable For

Suitability depends on your goals, skin or tissue characteristics, medical history, and tolerance for downtime. These criteria are reviewed in detail during your assessment.

  • Mild to moderate skin laxity where gradual firmness improvement is the goal
  • Crepey texture or loss of skin quality rather than volume loss
  • Patients who prefer subtle, natural-looking changes over time
  • Those willing to commit to a planned course of 2–3 sessions
  • Adults (18+) who understand results are not immediate

Not Suitable For

Some patients should avoid or defer treatment for safety reasons. We screen carefully before any procedure and explain alternatives where relevant.

  • Pregnancy, trying to conceive or breastfeeding
  • Active skin infection or uncontrolled inflammatory skin disease in the treatment area
  • Certain autoimmune or connective tissue conditions (assessed case-by-case)
  • History of severe reactions to injectables or tendency to problematic scarring
  • Anyone seeking immediate volume or instant visible change

Final suitability is confirmed during a medical consultation and assessment.

When we don't recommend it

A consultation may identify scenarios where a different treatment route is safer or more effective for your outcome goals.

  • If you want instant volume or contouring — Julaine is a biostimulator, not a gel filler, and results take weeks to months to develop.
  • If there is active skin inflammation or infection — we will delay treatment until your skin is settled.
  • If a connective tissue or autoimmune condition may affect healing — suitability is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
  • If expectations are for dramatic or rapid change — we will explain realistic timelines or recommend alternatives.
  • If another treatment or combination would deliver a safer or more effective result for your specific concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions

These answers cover common practical questions. If you need individual advice, please book a medical consultation.

No. Julaine is a PLLA collagen biostimulator, not a hyaluronic acid gel filler. It does not add immediate volume — it stimulates your body to produce new collagen gradually. Results are natural and progressive.
Profhilo is an HA-based skin booster that primarily improves hydration and glow. Julaine is a PLLA biostimulator that stimulates collagen production for firmness and texture. They address different concerns and are often complementary. See our full Julaine vs Profhilo comparison for a detailed breakdown.
Both contain poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), but Julaine uses next-generation LaSynPro technology with smaller, more uniform microspheres. Key differences: Julaine stimulates Type I collagen through direct fibroblast activation rather than inflammation, does not require post-treatment massage (Sculptra requires the 5-5-5 protocol), and has no reported cases of vascular occlusion. See our detailed Julaine vs Sculptra comparison.
Dermal fillers (typically hyaluronic acid) add immediate volume and can be dissolved if needed. Julaine is a biostimulator that triggers your body to produce its own collagen over months — it does not add volume directly. Fillers are better for immediate contouring; Julaine is better for gradual skin quality and firmness improvement. Many patients benefit from both at different stages.
Unlike Sculptra, which requires a strict 5-5-5 massage protocol, Julaine does not require post-treatment massage. This is due to the more uniform particle size produced by LaSynPro manufacturing, which reduces the risk of product aggregation and nodule formation.
Results develop gradually over weeks to months as your body produces new collagen. Most patients begin noticing improvements in skin radiance and texture from around 4–6 weeks, with progressive firmness improvement continuing for 3–6 months after each session.
This varies by individual, baseline skin quality, and number of sessions completed. Many patients find results last 12–24 months. The collagen your body produces is your own, so while it will naturally diminish over time, the improvement is genuine structural change rather than a temporary cosmetic effect. Maintenance scheduling is discussed at review.
Yes. Julaine is increasingly used to address facial changes caused by GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro. Rapid weight loss can deplete facial fat pads, causing a gaunt or aged appearance. Julaine stimulates collagen production to restore skin quality and firmness naturally, rather than simply replacing volume. We assess whether Julaine alone or a combination approach is most appropriate during consultation.
Julaine is CE-marked for use in Europe and MHRA-approved in the UK. Poly-L-lactic acid as a material class has been used safely in medicine for over 50 years. Julaine is manufactured by Nordberg Medical of Sweden using their proprietary LaSynPro technology.
LaSynPro is the proprietary manufacturing process developed by Nordberg Medical to produce Julaine's PLLA microspheres. It creates highly purified, uniformly sized particles that distribute more predictably in tissue and stimulate a controlled collagen response. This precision manufacturing is what distinguishes Julaine from older PLLA biostimulators.
Yes. Julaine is often combined with HA boosters (like Profhilo or SkinVive) for a comprehensive skin-quality plan — Profhilo for surface hydration and glow, Julaine for deeper structural collagen. We may also combine with energy-based devices such as Ultherapy or Morpheus8 where appropriate. Timing and sequencing are planned during consultation.
Common areas include mid-face and cheeks, jawline and lower face, neck and décolletage. Hand treatment is available in selected cases. Each area has specific anatomical considerations, and suitability is confirmed during your consultation.
Julaine treatment at Berkshire Aesthetics starts from £750 per session. Most patients require a course of 2–3 sessions for optimal results. A consultation with Dr Langdon includes a personalised treatment plan and cost estimate. Flexible payment options are available.
Yes. The neck and décolletage are common treatment areas for Julaine. These areas are particularly prone to crepey texture and laxity because the skin is thinner with fewer oil glands. Julaine can improve firmness and texture in these areas when administered by an experienced practitioner. Suitability is assessed during consultation.
Your appointment includes a thorough skin quality assessment, discussion of your concerns and expectations, and medical history review. Dr Langdon explains realistic timelines, the science behind collagen biostimulation, and why results develop gradually. If Julaine is suitable, treatment can often be carried out at the same appointment.
Most patients can return to work the same day or next day. Light redness, bumps and bruising may be visible but typically settle within 24–72 hours. You can wear makeup to cover minor redness if needed once the area has healed.
Julaine is suitable for all skin tones. There are no specific contraindications based on skin colour. However, individual healing and results vary, so suitability is assessed during consultation based on your skin quality and goals.
Most patients benefit from a course of 2–3 sessions spaced approximately 4–6 weeks apart. The number of sessions depends on your baseline skin quality, treatment area, and goals. Some patients with milder concerns may see excellent results from 2 sessions, while others with more advanced laxity may benefit from 3. Your treatment plan is tailored during consultation and adjusted based on your response.
