Lumenis M22 Guide
How IPL, ResurFX and Q-Switch modules are selected for redness, pigmentation, acne and texture
Book ConsultationLumenis M22 is a multi-application platform rather than a single treatment. This matters for patients because your protocol can be tailored around different technologies within one system, depending on whether your priority is redness, pigment, acne, texture, or resurfacing.
At Berkshire Aesthetics, M22 planning is diagnosis-led. We map your dominant concern first, then choose the module, fluence and interval that fits your skin type and tolerance for downtime.
Core M22 Treatment Modules
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
Diffuse redness, superficial pigmentation, sun damage, active acne pathways and mixed-tone concerns.
ResurFX Fractional Laser
Texture irregularity, selected acne scar patterns, and collagen-remodelling protocols with managed downtime.
Q-Switch Pathways
Carbon peel protocols, selected pigment pathways and tattoo-removal planning in suitable patients.
M22 vs Cutera Excel V+
M22 and Excel V+ overlap for vascular and redness concerns, but they are not interchangeable in all cases. Excel V+ is often preferred for precise vessel-targeting, while M22 can be advantageous where mixed concerns (for example redness plus pigment plus texture) require staged multi-module plans.
Read the companion Cutera Excel V+ guide for a more vessel-focused framework.
Downtime and Session Planning
- IPL pathways usually involve mild redness for 24 to 72 hours.
- ResurFX can involve longer recovery depending on intensity and area treated.
- Most protocols require a course of sessions rather than one-off treatment.
Your final plan is based on diagnosis, skin response, and risk management. We avoid one-size-fits-all package selling and only proceed where expected benefit is clinically realistic.

Lumenis M22 FAQs
- What is the Lumenis M22 used for?
- The Lumenis M22 is a multi-application platform rather than a single treatment. Its IPL module treats diffuse redness, superficial pigmentation, sun damage and selected acne pathways. ResurFX is a fractional non-ablative laser used for texture, fine lines and selected acne scar patterns. Q-Switch modules deliver carbon peel protocols, pigment-targeting and tattoo-removal pathways.
- How many M22 sessions will I need?
- Most protocols require a course rather than a single session. IPL pathways often need 3–5 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart. ResurFX typically needs 3–5 sessions at 4–6 week intervals. Carbon peel and Q-Switch pigment protocols vary. Your doctor will set the interval and session count based on your diagnosis, skin type and response.
- Is M22 IPL safe for darker skin tones?
- IPL is generally best suited to lighter Fitzpatrick skin types (I–III). In darker skin types (IV–VI) the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation and unintended bleaching is higher, and alternative modalities may be safer. We assess skin type carefully at consultation and will recommend a different pathway if IPL is not appropriate for your skin.
- What is the downtime after M22 treatment?
- IPL pathways usually involve mild redness for 24 to 72 hours; pigmented spots may temporarily darken before flaking off over 5–10 days. ResurFX can involve 2–5 days of pinkness and mild swelling depending on intensity. Carbon peel is typically a lunchtime treatment with minimal downtime. Strict SPF is mandatory after all M22 pathways.
- Does M22 IPL hurt?
- Most patients describe each IPL pulse as a brief warm snap, similar to an elastic band. The M22 has integrated cooling to reduce discomfort. ResurFX is generally more intense than IPL and topical numbing cream is applied before treatment. Carbon peel is usually very comfortable.
- M22 vs Cutera Excel V+ — which is better?
- They overlap for vascular and redness concerns but are not interchangeable. Excel V+ is often preferred for precise vessel targeting (discrete thread veins, focal rosacea vessels). M22 is often selected where mixed concerns — redness plus pigment plus texture — require staged multi-module plans within one platform. Many patients benefit from both over time.
- Can M22 remove tattoos?
- The Q-Switch Nd:YAG module can treat selected tattoos, particularly black and dark blue ink. Tattoo removal typically requires multiple sessions (often 6–10 or more) spaced 6–8 weeks apart. Results depend on ink type, density, age of tattoo and skin type. Not all tattoos respond equally, and complete removal is not always achievable.
Why we start with a consultation
Every treatment begins with a medical assessment. We need to understand your medical history, current health, skin condition and concerns before prescribing any procedure. This protects your safety and ensures the treatment is clinically appropriate for you.
During your consultation, your clinician will explain what the treatment can realistically achieve, any risks specific to you, and whether an alternative might be more appropriate. Consultations are carried out by our doctors or advanced aesthetic practitioners, depending on the treatment or concern being assessed.
