Thread Vein Treatments
Clinical assessment and sclerotherapy management of superficial telangiectasia
Telangiectasia (thread veins or spider veins) are dilated superficial venules commonly presenting on the lower extremities. At Berkshire Aesthetics, our medical assessment includes evaluation of underlying venous competence before recommending microsclerotherapy — a clinically validated, minimally invasive procedure to occlude and resorb visible surface vessels.
Aetiology & Contributing Factors
- Genetic predisposition — thread veins often run in families
- Hormonal influences, particularly oestrogen (pregnancy, contraception, menopause)
- Prolonged standing or sitting, especially in occupations requiring extended periods on your feet
- Age-related weakening of vein walls and valves
- Sun exposure, particularly on the face
- Obesity or excess body weight increasing venous pressure
- Previous deep vein thrombosis or venous insufficiency
Clinical Presentation
- Fine, visible red, blue or purple veins on the legs, typically on the thighs, calves or ankles
- Web-like or branching patterns of small surface veins
- Occasionally associated with aching, heaviness or discomfort in the legs
- May worsen over time without treatment
- Can cause self-consciousness, particularly in warmer months
Evidence-Based Treatment Modalities
Treatment selection is individualised following clinical assessment, taking into account disease severity, Fitzpatrick skin type, medical history and patient goals.
Why we start with a consultation
Every treatment begins with a medical assessment. We need to understand your medical history, current health, skin condition and concerns before prescribing any procedure. This protects your safety and ensures the treatment is clinically appropriate for you.
During your consultation, Dr Langdon will explain what the treatment can realistically achieve, any risks specific to you, and whether an alternative might be more appropriate.
All bookings are subject to our Booking Conditions.
