Why Aftercare Matters

Microneedling works by creating thousands of controlled micro-injuries in the skin, triggering the body's natural wound-healing response and stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin. Whether you have had a SkinPen treatment or a Morpheus8 session at our clinic on Furze Platt Road, Maidenhead, what you do in the hours and days following your procedure has a significant impact on your results.

Proper aftercare serves two essential purposes: it protects the treated skin while it is vulnerable to irritation and infection, and it creates the optimal environment for collagen remodelling. Neglecting aftercare can lead to prolonged redness, hyperpigmentation, breakouts, or even scarring — outcomes that are entirely avoidable with the right approach.

This guide provides a comprehensive day-by-day timeline of what to expect after microneedling, along with clear advice on products, activities, and skincare routines. It applies primarily to medical-grade microneedling performed in a clinical setting. Home dermarolling devices, which penetrate far less deeply, will have a much shorter and milder recovery.

Day-by-Day Recovery Timeline

Day 1: Immediately After Treatment

Your skin will look and feel similar to moderate sunburn — red, warm, and tight. This is completely normal and indicates that the inflammatory healing cascade has begun. You may also notice some pinpoint bleeding during or immediately after the procedure, particularly in areas treated at deeper needle depths.

What to do: Leave the skin completely alone for the first 12 hours. Do not apply any products other than those given to you at the clinic. Do not wash your face, apply makeup, or touch the treated area with unwashed hands. If your skin feels uncomfortably tight or warm, you may apply a thin layer of the post-procedure balm or hyaluronic acid serum provided by your practitioner.

Days 2–3: Peak Redness & Sensitivity

Redness typically peaks on day two and begins to subside by day three. The skin may feel dry, tight, and sensitive to the touch. Some patients experience mild swelling, particularly around the eyes and forehead.

What to do: You may gently cleanse your face with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water. Pat dry — never rub. Apply a gentle, hydrating moisturiser and a broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen before going outdoors. Avoid any active skincare ingredients.

Days 3–5: Flaking & Peeling

As the skin begins to renew, you may notice light flaking or peeling, similar to what you might experience after mild sunburn. This is a sign that the old, damaged surface cells are being shed to make way for fresh, new skin. The degree of peeling varies between individuals and depends on the depth of treatment.

What to do: Do not pick, scratch, or exfoliate the flaking skin. Allow it to shed naturally. Continue with gentle cleansing, hydrating moisturiser, and sunscreen. If the dryness is significant, you may layer a hyaluronic acid serum beneath your moisturiser for additional hydration.

Days 5–7: Skin Settling

By day five, most redness and flaking will have resolved. The skin may still feel slightly more sensitive than usual, but you should be comfortable resuming most of your normal activities. Many patients begin to notice the first signs of improvement — smoother texture, a brighter complexion, and reduced pore visibility.

Day 7 Onwards: New Skin Emerges

From one week post-treatment, the skin has largely healed on the surface. The deeper collagen remodelling process, however, continues for several months. You may gradually reintroduce your normal skincare routine, starting with the gentlest products first. Full results from a single session are typically visible at four to six weeks, with continued improvement over three to six months as new collagen matures.

What to Avoid After Microneedling

The micro-channels created during treatment leave the skin temporarily more permeable and vulnerable. The following should be strictly avoided during the recovery period:

First 24 Hours

  • Makeup: Foundation, concealer, powder, and other cosmetics can introduce bacteria into the open micro-channels and cause breakouts or infection. Wait at least 24 hours before applying any makeup, and use mineral-based products when you do resume.
  • Active skincare ingredients: Retinoids, vitamin C serums (in acidic formulations), AHAs, BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, and any exfoliating products must be avoided for at least 48 to 72 hours, and ideally for the full first week.
  • Sun exposure: The freshly treated skin is extremely photosensitive. Direct sun exposure in the first 24 hours can cause hyperpigmentation and significantly compromise your results.
  • Touching the face: Avoid unnecessary contact with the treated area. Bacteria from your hands can enter the open channels and cause infection.

First 48–72 Hours

  • Strenuous exercise: Heavy sweating can irritate the healing skin and introduce bacteria. Light walking is acceptable, but avoid the gym, running, and hot yoga for at least 48 hours.
  • Swimming pools, saunas & steam rooms: Chlorinated water, hot steam, and communal water all pose infection risks. Avoid these for at least 72 hours.
  • Hot showers and baths: Keep water temperature lukewarm rather than hot for the first two to three days.

First Week

  • Alcohol-based products: Toners, astringents, or any products containing denatured alcohol will sting and may cause irritation.
  • Waxing or other facial treatments: Do not have any additional skin treatments for at least two weeks post-microneedling.
  • Prolonged sun exposure: Even with sunscreen, try to minimise direct sun exposure for the first week. Wear a wide-brimmed hat if spending time outdoors.

Recommended Aftercare Products & Routine

Keeping your post-microneedling routine simple and gentle is the key to a smooth recovery. We recommend the following approach:

  • Cleanser: A fragrance-free, soap-free, pH-balanced cleanser. Avoid foaming cleansers or anything containing sulphates.
  • Hydrating serum: A pure hyaluronic acid serum helps to lock in moisture and support the skin's barrier repair. Apply to slightly damp skin for best absorption.
  • Moisturiser: A rich, fragrance-free barrier cream or moisturiser. Look for ingredients such as ceramides, squalane, or panthenol, which support barrier function without irritating sensitised skin.
  • Sunscreen: A mineral (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) SPF 50 is preferable in the first few days, as chemical sunscreens may cause stinging on compromised skin. After day five, you may switch to your usual sunscreen.

When to resume active skincare: Retinoids, vitamin C, and exfoliating acids can typically be reintroduced from day seven to ten, depending on how your skin has healed. Start with a lower concentration than usual and build back up gradually. If your skin is still pink or sensitive beyond day seven, wait a few more days before reintroducing actives.

At your treatment appointment, we will provide you with specific product recommendations tailored to your skin type and the depth of treatment performed.

Recovery: SkinPen vs Morpheus8

While both SkinPen and Morpheus8 involve micro-injuries to the skin, their recovery profiles differ because of their distinct mechanisms of action. Understanding these differences will help you plan your downtime appropriately.

SkinPen (Standard Microneedling)

SkinPen creates purely mechanical micro-channels using fine needles. Recovery is generally straightforward: expect 24 to 48 hours of redness similar to sunburn, followed by two to three days of mild dryness or flaking. Most patients are comfortable returning to work the day after treatment with mineral makeup if desired. Social downtime is typically two to three days.

Morpheus8 (Radiofrequency Microneedling)

Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy, which heats the deeper layers of the skin to stimulate more intensive collagen remodelling and tissue tightening. Because of this additional thermal component, recovery is slightly more involved. Expect redness and swelling for three to five days, with some patients experiencing mild grid-pattern marks on the skin from the treatment pins. These typically resolve within five to seven days. Social downtime is usually three to five days.

The aftercare principles remain the same for both treatments — gentle cleansing, hydration, sun protection, and avoidance of active ingredients — but Morpheus8 patients should allow a longer window before resuming strenuous exercise and active skincare. How to Optimise Your Results & Recognise Complications

Optimising Your Outcome

Microneedling is most effective when approached as a course of treatments rather than a one-off session. Most patients achieve optimal results with three to four SkinPen sessions or two to three Morpheus8 sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. Between treatments, maintaining a consistent skincare routine with SPF, retinoids (once healed), and antioxidants will support and extend your results.

Lifestyle factors also play a role. Adequate hydration, a balanced diet rich in vitamins A and C, sufficient sleep, and avoiding smoking all contribute to the skin's ability to heal and produce quality collagen.

When to Contact Us

While complications from medical-grade microneedling are uncommon when the procedure is performed in a clinical setting with proper aftercare, it is important to know when to seek advice. Contact the clinic if you experience any of the following:

  • Redness, swelling, or tenderness that worsens rather than improves after day three.
  • Pustules, yellow crusting, or signs of infection at the treatment sites.
  • Development of new or worsening pigmentation (particularly in darker skin tones).
  • Persistent itching or hive-like reactions that do not respond to simple moisturising.
  • Any symptom that causes you concern — it is always better to ask than to wait.

At Berkshire Aesthetics, all microneedling treatments are performed under the oversight of Dr Selena Langdon (GMC 6159259) at our CQC-registered clinic. We provide comprehensive aftercare instructions at your appointment and are available to answer questions throughout your recovery.
