Skin Dehydration Treatments

Clinical assessment and targeted restoration of skin hydration and barrier function

Skin dehydration is characterised by impaired barrier function and reduced water content within the epidermis and dermis, leading to tightness, dullness and accelerated fine line formation. Unlike dry skin (a skin type with low sebum production), dehydration is a condition that can affect any skin type. At Berkshire Aesthetics, our doctor-led assessment identifies the underlying causes and recommends evidence-based treatments to restore optimal hydration levels and skin health.

Aetiology & Contributing Factors

  • Impaired skin barrier function allowing transepidermal water loss
  • Environmental factors including central heating, air conditioning and low humidity
  • Excessive use of harsh cleansers or active skincare ingredients that strip the barrier
  • Inadequate daily water intake
  • Sun exposure and UV-induced damage to the skin barrier
  • Ageing-related decline in natural moisturising factors and hyaluronic acid
  • Lifestyle factors such as alcohol consumption, caffeine and poor diet

Clinical Presentation

  • Skin feeling tight, especially after cleansing
  • A dull, lacklustre complexion that lacks radiance
  • Fine dehydration lines that appear more pronounced when skin is dry
  • Rough or flaky texture despite an oily skin type
  • Increased sensitivity or reactivity to skincare products
  • Skin that does not bounce back quickly when gently pinched
  • A general tired or flat appearance to the skin

Evidence-Based Treatment Modalities

Treatment selection is individualised following clinical assessment, taking into account disease severity, Fitzpatrick skin type, medical history and patient goals.

Why we start with a consultation

Every treatment begins with a medical assessment. We need to understand your medical history, current health, skin condition and concerns before prescribing any procedure. This protects your safety and ensures the treatment is clinically appropriate for you.

During your consultation, Dr Langdon will explain what the treatment can realistically achieve, any risks specific to you, and whether an alternative might be more appropriate.

Clinical FAQs: Skin Dehydration

Dry skin is a skin type characterised by low sebum (oil) production, whereas dehydrated skin is a condition caused by lack of water in the skin. You can have oily skin that is also dehydrated. Treatment approaches differ depending on the underlying issue.
Common signs include tightness, dullness, increased fine lines and rough texture even in oily areas. A clinical skin assessment can confirm dehydration and identify contributing factors.
The best approach depends on the severity and cause. Profhilo and SkinVive provide deep injectable hydration, while HydraFacial offers an excellent non-invasive option. Your doctor will recommend the most suitable treatment during consultation.
Profhilo typically involves two sessions four weeks apart. HydraFacial may be recommended as a course of monthly treatments. Polynucleotides usually require 2-3 sessions. Your doctor will create an individualised plan.
HydraFacial has no downtime. Injectable treatments such as Profhilo, polynucleotides and SkinVive may cause mild swelling or small bumps at injection sites for 24-48 hours. Most patients return to normal activities immediately.
Profhilo results typically last 6-9 months. SkinVive provides hydration improvement for around 6 months. HydraFacial gives an immediate boost with cumulative benefits from regular sessions. Maintenance treatments help sustain results.
Topical products containing hyaluronic acid and ceramides can support skin hydration, but clinical treatments deliver active ingredients deeper into the skin for more significant and longer-lasting results. We often recommend combining both approaches.
Yes. A doctor-led consultation ensures we identify the cause of your dehydration and recommend the safest, most effective treatment for your skin type and concerns.
