Eye bags vs dark circles: what is the difference?

Eye bags and dark circles are not the same problem, although they often overlap. Eye bags are usually puffiness or lower-eyelid fullness from fat pad prominence, fluid retention or skin laxity. Dark circles are colour or shadow under the eyes caused by hollowing, pigmentation, visible vessels, thin skin or lifestyle and allergy factors. The safest treatment depends on which cause is dominant.

When this may help

  • You are unsure whether your concern is puffiness, hollowing, pigmentation or thin under-eye skin.
  • You want to know whether filler, polynucleotides, laser or skin boosters are more relevant.
  • You want a realistic explanation before booking an under-eye consultation.

When this may not be suitable

  • You have sudden swelling, pain, redness, visual symptoms or one-sided change that needs medical assessment.
  • You expect one injectable treatment to fix every under-eye concern.
  • You have significant fat pad prolapse that may need surgical opinion.

Risks and limitations

  • Treating eye bags with filler in unsuitable patients can worsen puffiness.
  • Laser or IPL is only suitable for selected pigment or vascular causes.
  • Under-eye injectables carry bruising, swelling, Tyndall effect and rare vascular risks.

What we assess in consultation

  • Whether the concern is eye bags, hollowing, dark circles or a mix
  • Skin thickness, pigment, vascular show-through and fluid retention
  • Whether tear trough filler, Plinest, Ameela, laser, skincare or referral is safest
  • Downtime, expected improvement and whether treatment should be avoided
Unsure whether this is right for you? A consultation is the safest next step.

Related questions

Can eye bags cause dark circles?

Yes. Puffiness can cast a shadow that looks like a dark circle, but dark circles can also come from pigment, thin skin or visible vessels.

Is filler good for eye bags?

Only sometimes. Filler may soften a hollow beneath a bag, but true fat-pad puffiness or fluid retention can look worse with filler.

Can laser treat dark circles?

Laser or IPL may help selected pigment or vascular causes, but it will not correct hollowing or true puffiness.
