- What are hair exosomes?
- Exosomes are tiny extracellular vesicles that cells use to send signalling molecules to other cells. In hair restoration, purified exosomes derived from bone-marrow mesenchymal stem cells carry growth factors and microRNAs that signal to dormant hair follicles to re-enter an active growth phase. At Berkshire Aesthetics we use AnteAGE MD exosomes delivered via SkinPen microneedling channels, which allows the exosomes to reach the follicles directly.
- Do hair exosomes actually work?
- Clinical studies and real-world reports show meaningful improvement in hair density, thickness and visible scalp coverage for many patients with early-to-moderate thinning, particularly androgenetic hair loss and telogen effluvium. Exosomes do not create new follicles where there are none — they stimulate existing dormant follicles. Patients with fully scarred or completely lost follicles are not suitable. Response is individual and a consultation assesses likely benefit.
- Are exosomes better than PRP for hair loss?
- Exosomes and PRP both aim to stimulate dormant hair follicles, but they use different signalling mechanisms. Exosomes contain a broader and more concentrated set of growth factors and microRNAs than PRP and do not require a blood draw. Clinical reports suggest exosomes may produce more robust regrowth, particularly in patients who did not respond well to PRP. PRP remains a valid, lower-cost option; exosomes are often chosen where greater regenerative signalling is wanted or where PRP has not produced sufficient results.
- How many hair exosome sessions do I need?
- Most patients have a course of 3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Some patients with more advanced thinning benefit from a 4-session course. Follow-up maintenance is typically one session every 6–12 months to sustain the response.
- When will I see results from hair exosomes?
- Early signs of reduced shedding and softer new-growth hairs are often noticed within 4–6 weeks of the first session. Visible density improvement typically develops over 3–6 months. Full effect of a course is assessed at around 6 months after the final session. Progress is monitored with clinical photography at each review.
- Does the hair exosome treatment hurt?
- Topical anaesthetic is applied before SkinPen microneedling to minimise discomfort. Most patients describe the sensation as mild scratching or pressure rather than sharp pain. Scalp microneedling is generally well-tolerated. Some mild redness and tenderness can persist for 24–48 hours.
- What is the downtime after hair exosomes?
- There is essentially no social downtime. Scalp redness and mild tenderness settle within 24 hours. Hair should not be washed for 12 hours after treatment; harsh shampoos, heat styling, sauna and swimming should be avoided for 48 hours.
- How much do hair exosomes cost?
- At Berkshire Aesthetics, hair exosome sessions are priced from £350 per session, with a course of three typically costing £900–£1,200. Pricing is confirmed at consultation after scalp assessment.
- Can women have exosome hair treatment?
- Yes. Exosome hair restoration is appropriate for both women and men. Common female indications include female-pattern thinning (particularly at the crown and parting), post-partum telogen effluvium, and stress-related diffuse shedding. Suitability is assessed at consultation and underlying medical causes of hair loss are considered before treatment.
- Are hair exosomes safe?
- Exosome products used in UK medical aesthetics are regulated as cosmetic products and purified to remove cellular material. Delivered by a trained clinician in a CQC-registered setting using sterile technique, treatment has a strong safety record. Common side effects are temporary redness and tenderness. Rare complications include infection or inflammatory reaction, which require clinical review.
