What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared, non-surgical fat reduction treatment that uses cryolipolysis to freeze and permanently destroy stubborn fat cells. The treatment targets localised areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise — without surgery, needles or downtime.

At Berkshire Aesthetics, CoolSculpting is carried out under the clinical oversight of Dr Selena Langdon. Dr Langdon is a recognised CoolSculpting complications advisor and ensures every treatment is planned with precision and patient safety as the priority.

How does CoolSculpting work?

CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to target and crystallise fat cells beneath the skin. A specially designed applicator is placed on the treatment area, delivering precise cooling to the fat layer without damaging surrounding tissue.

Once the fat cells are frozen, they undergo apoptosis (natural cell death) and are gradually processed and eliminated by your body's lymphatic system over the following 2–3 months. The result is a measurable reduction in fat thickness in the treated area.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does CoolSculpting work?

CoolSculpting uses cryolipolysis — controlled cooling — to freeze and destroy fat cells beneath the skin. The treated fat cells crystallise, die, and are naturally eliminated by your body over the following weeks. The surrounding skin, nerves and tissue are not affected.

Is CoolSculpting suitable for weight loss?

CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss treatment. It is designed for targeted fat reduction in specific areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. Ideal candidates are close to their target weight but have stubborn pockets of fat they want to address.

How many CoolSculpting sessions will I need?

Most patients see noticeable results after one session per area. Some areas may benefit from a second treatment cycle for optimal results. Dr Langdon will advise on the recommended number of sessions during your consultation.

What areas can CoolSculpting treat?

CoolSculpting can treat the abdomen, flanks (love handles), inner and outer thighs, double chin (submental fat), upper arms, bra fat, back fat and the area beneath the buttocks (banana roll). Different applicator sizes are used for each area.

How long do CoolSculpting results last?

Results are long-lasting because the treated fat cells are permanently destroyed. However, maintaining a stable weight through a healthy lifestyle is important — remaining fat cells can still enlarge if you gain weight.

Is there any downtime after CoolSculpting?

There is no downtime. Most patients return to normal activities immediately. You may experience temporary numbness, redness, swelling or mild tenderness in the treated area, which typically resolves within a few days to weeks.

How is CoolSculpting different from liposuction?

CoolSculpting is a non-surgical, non-invasive alternative to liposuction. There are no incisions, no anaesthesia and no recovery period. While liposuction removes fat immediately, CoolSculpting results develop gradually over 2–3 months as your body naturally processes the destroyed fat cells.

Why we start with a consultation

Every treatment begins with a medical assessment. We need to understand your medical history, current health, skin condition and concerns before prescribing any procedure. This protects your safety and ensures the treatment is clinically appropriate for you.

During your consultation, Dr Langdon will explain what the treatment can realistically achieve, any risks specific to you, and whether an alternative might be more appropriate.
