Berkshire Aesthetics is a doctor-led, CQC-registered aesthetic clinic in Maidenhead. All treatments begin with a consultation to assess suitability, medical history, risks and realistic outcomes.

Does fat freezing work?

Fat freezing, known clinically as cryolipolysis and most commonly delivered as CoolSculpting, is supported by published evidence for a reduction of around 20 to 25 per cent of the fat in a treated pocket in suitable candidates. It is a contouring treatment for discrete, pinchable areas of fat, not a weight-loss treatment. Outcomes vary by individual, develop over 8 to 12 weeks and should be assessed in a doctor-led consultation.

When this may help

  • You have stable weight and localised, pinchable pockets of fat.
  • You want a non-surgical option and accept gradual results.
  • You want assessment by a doctor experienced in cryolipolysis and its complications.

When this may not be suitable

  • Your main goal is weight loss rather than localised contouring.
  • You have cold-sensitivity conditions, hernias or significant skin laxity in the area.
  • You expect surgical-level reshaping from a non-surgical treatment.

Risks and limitations

  • Temporary redness, swelling, bruising, numbness and tenderness are common.
  • Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia is a recognised but rare complication.
  • Underwhelming results if patient selection or expectations are not realistic.

What we assess in consultation

  • Whether the concern is truly suitable for cryolipolysis
  • Applicator choice and number of cycles
  • Realistic expected reduction and timeline
  • Discussion of alternatives such as Emsculpt Neo or no treatment
Unsure whether this is right for you? A consultation is the safest next step.

Related questions

Is fat freezing the same as CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is the most established branded cryolipolysis device. Other fat-freezing devices exist but vary in evidence and safety profile.

How long do fat-freezing results take?

Results typically develop gradually over 8 to 12 weeks as the body processes the affected fat cells.

Can fat freezing replace weight loss?

No. It is a contouring treatment for localised fat, not a substitute for diet, exercise or medical weight management.
