Berkshire Aesthetics is a doctor-led, CQC-registered aesthetic clinic in Maidenhead. All treatments begin with a consultation to assess suitability, medical history, risks and realistic outcomes.

CoolSculpting vs liposuction: what is the difference?

CoolSculpting and liposuction both reduce fat, but they are very different procedures. CoolSculpting is non-surgical, uses controlled cooling to reduce a discrete fat pocket gradually with minimal downtime, and typically achieves around 20 to 25 per cent reduction in a treated area. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that physically removes larger volumes of fat in one operation, with more dramatic change but anaesthetic, recovery time and surgical risk. The right option depends on the amount of fat, your goals, health and tolerance for downtime, and should be assessed individually.

When this may help

  • You are weighing non-surgical contouring against a surgical option.
  • You have a discrete, pinchable fat pocket and want minimal downtime.
  • You want an honest view of which approach fits your anatomy and goals.

When this may not be suitable

  • You want large-volume fat removal in a single procedure — that is a surgical question, not cryolipolysis.
  • Your concern is overall weight rather than a localised fat deposit.
  • You expect either treatment to replace diet, exercise or weight management.

Risks and limitations

  • CoolSculpting: temporary redness, swelling, bruising and numbness; rare paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH).
  • Liposuction: surgical and anaesthetic risks, bruising, swelling, contour irregularity and a recovery period.
  • Choosing the wrong procedure for your goal can mean disappointing results or unnecessary surgery.

What we assess in consultation

  • The volume and distribution of fat and which approach suits it
  • Your health, downtime tolerance and expectations
  • Whether CoolSculpting, Emsculpt Neo, surgical referral or no treatment is most appropriate
  • Realistic results, risks and total cost of each route

Related questions

Is CoolSculpting as effective as liposuction?

No — liposuction removes more fat in a single surgical procedure, while CoolSculpting offers more modest, gradual, non-surgical reduction of a discrete pocket. Each suits different goals, which we assess in consultation.

Which has less downtime?

CoolSculpting has minimal to no downtime, with most patients returning to normal activities immediately. Liposuction is surgery and involves a recovery period.

Do you offer liposuction?

Berkshire Aesthetics is a non-surgical, doctor-led clinic. If surgery is the more appropriate option for your goals, we will say so and discuss onward referral rather than recommend cryolipolysis that is unlikely to meet your expectations.
