Ageing Gracefully is a Beautiful Thing

Facial Aesthetics

Ageing gracefully is a beautiful thing, however, some changes which occur we wish would slow down. At Berkshire Aesthetics our approach is to alleviate some of the physical signs which look older than you feel.

Fifty is seen as the new thirty, sixty the new forty, our lifestyles are much more active, social, and varied than our parents at the same age. Modern society and lifestyles often lead us to challenged when how we feel on the inside does not reconcile with how we look on the outside.

Best of all at Berkshire Aesthetics, all facial treatments are performed under the direction of Dr. Selena Langdon who is one of the UK’s leading aesthetic doctors. She is a Country Expert for the Swiss filler brand Teoxane and an Ambassador for Obagi Medical.

how does our appearance changes as we age

fundamentals of the ageing face

Facial ageing a complex process with many structural changes going on behind the scenes. When we are young the fat in our faces is evenly distributed and which plump up the forehead, temples, cheeks, and areas around the eyes and mouth.

With age the face loses volume as fat decreases and clumps up, and shifts downward. Facial features that were formerly round may sink, and skin that was smooth and tight gets loose and sags. Meanwhile other parts of the face gain fat, particularly the lower half, so we tend to sag around the chin and jowls appear in the neck.

And, of course, there are the wrinkles. The deep ones in the forehead and between the eyebrows are called expression, or animation, lines. They’re the result of facial muscles continually tugging on, and eventually creasing, the skin. Other folds may get deeper because of the way fat decreases and moves around. Finer wrinkles are due to sun damage, smoking, and natural degeneration of elements of the skin that keep it thick and supple.

Why does the face age?

The face ages due to various biological and environmental factors. Here are some of the key reasons why the face ages:

Loss of collagen and elastin: As we age, the body produces less collagen and elastin, which are proteins that help keep skin firm and elastic. This loss of structural support leads to wrinkles, sagging, and a loss of facial volume.

Reduction in fat and bone density: The face naturally loses fat and bone density over time, which can contribute to a hollowed-out appearance, particularly around the cheeks, eyes, and temples.

Exposure to UV radiation: Sun exposure damages the skin’s collagen and elastin fibers, leading to premature aging and an increase in fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.

Repetitive facial movements: Constant facial expressions, such as squinting or frowning, can contribute to the formation of wrinkles, particularly around the eyes and forehead.

Lifestyle factors: Smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, and stress can also accelerate the aging process, causing the face to appear older than it is.
